Core Subjects?

Is there any such thing as a core subject in the Middle School any more? Considering that we are encouraging students to be innovative problem solvers, are these skills attached to any particular subject? Surely we have to consider Numeracy and Literacy to be the base of everything else we do, but are they core subjects? Does a 'core' subject vary from student to student? What emphasis should we be putting, in terms of time, on each subject?

  1. I am totally with you on this one. Core? what does it mean? Where is the core? - is the question we should ask? Why do something just because we think we should. Shouldn't we do something because the situation, issue, question posed requires us to use those skills and knowledge. Where is the power in teaching core subjects in isolation?

  2. Power being the operative word.
Underpinning every curriculum are the choices that are made for us about knowledge systems.
Who gets to say which knowledge has the most value? Those who have the most power.
Changing the narrative on what constitutes important 'knowings' is a revolutionary act...I'm game if you are =]
